The in-game interface seems to have finally been perfected the changes from Close Combat 2 to Close Combat 3 are largely tweaks, not major overhauls. Neither the scope nor scale has changed dramatically. In Close Combat 3, the screen resolution is certainly adequate.
#Close combat 3 series
That said, I don't know how much farther the Close Combat series can evolve in its current form. Personally, I think these kinds of games are the future of wargaming, if wargaming ever wants to be anything more than a niche genre for bookkeepers and rules mavens. Making a game this playable but deeply complex is no easy task: consider that in the last couple years the only other designer of a real-time wargame was Sid Meier. Aficionados of neither group, it seems, wants to play Close Combat in any great numbers. Maybe it's because the game is such a hybrid-an unlikely marriage of the young, fun and easy RTS games and the Old Guard, hex-mapped, turn-based wargames. So I am a little bothered by the fact that Close Combat doesn't get wider recognition. And while its artificial intelligence may not be a Virtual Rommel, show me a real-time game that is. It is easy to set up custom scenarios and play other players online. And that means more variety in gameplay, a longer-lasting product. These tactics are far more difficult to master, more challenging, and more involving. One must learn and employ real tactics, or something resembling them, in order to succeed. The result is a title with all the accessibility and immediacy of a real-time game like Command & Conquer, but also the tactical depth and accuracy of a true wargame. Close Combat is really a wargame, with rules as complex and as detailed as any other wargame, though most of the subsystems are hidden from the user by the computer. You command any number of units from an overhead perspective, issuing them orders to move forward or fire with the mouse.

On the surface, Close Combat looks like a real-time strategy game.

Instead it's the Red Army against the Wehrmacht, in the most important battles of the 20th century.įor those of you who are not familiar with the series, here's a brief explanation. The setting has also changed, from World War II's West Front to the East Front-making this a wargame that doesn't actually feature Americans, for a change. More noticeably, the interface has been improved considerably-units can now be faced in any of eight directions, some of the visual, color coded information has been simplified, and For those of you are already familiar with the series, you can be assured that the same attention to detail that marked the first two games is maintained, if not improved upon here.
